Jim Huber, 1944-2012

Obit Huber

Longtime CNN/TNT sports anchor/essayist Jim Huber died suddenly Monday. He was 67. An eloquent storyteller whose signature human-interest pieces were a staple of CNN sportscasts and TNT's coverage of the professional golf tour, Huber spent 27 years with Turner Broadcasting after a successful stint on local television in Atlanta. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed but Scott Michaux, a columnist for The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle, reported Huber passed away after being diagnosed with acute leukemia. Michaux wrote a tribute to his friend that appears in Tuesday's edition of the paper and is also available online. We thought it worth sharing. … [Read more...]

Bird on a wire as Fox-DirecTV deadline nears

directv_0

The tension is mounting in a dispute between DirecTV and the Fox cable networks over a new carriage agreement and sports fans across the U.S. are caught in the middle. Tuesday is D(rop)-Day if an accord can't be reached. DirecTV says it will yank FX, FSN, Speed, National Geographic Channel, Fox Soccer, Fox Soccer Plus, Fox Deportes, Fuel TV and Fox Movie Channel if Fox doesn't back down from its demand for a 40 percent increase in carriage costs. For its part, Fox claims it's willing to keep the status quo on rates until an agreement is reached. So why has DirecTV drawn a line in the sand? First and foremost, the satellite provider is obviously trying to keep its programming costs down. Retransmission fees have escalated to the point that the trickle down to its 19 million subscribers is getting unmanageable for many as they look for ways to cut back in a bad economy. Now … [Read more...]

Teaming Costas, Michaels home run for MLB Net

costasmichaels_display_image

Any aficionado of sports play-by-play had to be in their glory listening to Bob Costas and Al Michaels call Friday night's MLB Network telecast of the New York Mets-San Francisco Giants game. The broadcasting legends made it seem so effortless the commentary was as entertaining as the game itself, won by the Mets 5-2. It had been 16 years since Michaels, voice of the Giants from 1974-77, had done baseball and the two had never teamed for play-by-play until Friday. Costas suggested the idea to his NBC "Sunday Night Football" colleague months ago. In actuality, MLB Network viewers only heard Costas and Michaels for five innings. That's because they traded places with Mets announcers Gary Cohen and Ron Darling on SNY and Giants voices Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area for two innings apiece. The ever-classy Costas subtly let his guest take center stage on … [Read more...]

Nick Charles, 64, dies; pioneer CNN sportscaster

charles

Before "SportsCenter" became the powerhouse it is today, Nick Charles and Fred Hickman were blazing trails as anchors of CNN's "Sports Tonight," the network's centerpiece sports-news program that routinely out-rated its ESPN counterpart in cable's wild west years. Charles, who died Saturday at 64 after a long battle with bladder cancer (he would have turned 65 on June 30), was a CNN original — one of the pioneers along with people like Bernard Shaw, Don Farmer, Lou Dobbs and Don Harrison who made Ted Turner's vision for a 24-hour news network a reality when it went on the air June 1, 1980. The offer of national exposure must have been alluring to many of those who chose to join the nascent cable network based in Atlanta. Charles had built a strong following in the Washington, D.C., market as sports director of NBC-owned WRC-TV, but when CNN came calling he knew it was the right … [Read more...]

For God’s sake, what was NBC thinking?

200px-NBC_Sports.svg

Sometimes the media just asks for it. NBC’s ill-advised removal of the words “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance on its Sunday coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament has at least one member of Congress wanting to know: What were you thinking? Republican Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana said Wednesday he has written NBC Universal chairman Steve Burke to outline his “serious concern” over the network’s decision. Wrote Coats: “I’m disturbed with NBC’s decision to modify the Pledge for this broadcast. I understand that NBC acknowledged its error at a later point in Sunday’s broadcast, and has since stated that this action was a ‘bad decision’ made by a small group of individuals. Nonetheless, I remain concerned that such a decision to selectively edit the Pledge could be made in the first place. “As a result, I would like to request that NBC provide me … [Read more...]

Fox deal key to McCourts’ divorce settlement

images

The warring owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Frank and Jamie McCourt, agreed Friday to a divorce settlement that will ultimately come down to whether Major League Baseball approves a TV deal between the team and Fox worth about $400 million. Josh Fisher's DodgerDivorce.com reports that of that money, $10 million would go to Jamie directly, $50 million would be placed in a lock box, and about $80 million would go to paying off debt on Dodgers land. The TV deal is not a slam dunk despite Jamie McCourt's OK, concludes the website, because MLB is still investigating whether the team's finances and operations are on solid ground. MLB appears fully poised to seize the team if it cannot meet its June 30 payroll obligations. But DodgerDivorce.com points out that if the Fox deal is blocked and the team can't make payroll, the McCourts ironically will find themselves "allies in … [Read more...]

NBC reportedly keeps Olympics with $4.4 billion bid

NBC had broadcast every Summer Olympics since 1988 and every Winter Games since 2002 and, according to reports from Switzerland, will continue to do so through 2020. With an official announcement from the International Olympic Commitee due soon, sources told the Associated Press that NBC's bid of $4.4 billion defeated those put forth by Fox Sports and ESPN. NBC now will have exclusive rights to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the 2018 Winter Games and 2020 Olympics, whose sites have not yet been chosen. It was the first U.S. rights auction since 2003, when NBC won the 2010 and 2012 Olympics in a deal worth $2.2 billion. NBC winning bid was the first made by the new Comcast management that recently assumed ownership of NBC Universal. Not part of the contingent was Dick Ebersol, the former NBC Sports chairman who … [Read more...]

Fox Olympic bid in; intrigue heightens sans Ebersol

images-1

Fox Sports made its official presentation to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Monday by offering to buy U.S. TV rights to the next four Games starting with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. ESPN and NBC Sports are up next before the IOC with the winner of the bidding expected to be announced later Tuesday. In an email to The New York Times, David Hill, chairman of the Fox Sports Media Group, said, “Given the complexities of establishing an Olympic infrastructure, taking on four Games helps amortize the costs better than two, but we are submitting bids for two and four.” Of special interest Tuesday will be the presentation made by NBC, the first under the stewardship of the new Comcast management — and without longtime NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol. Ebersol's relationship with the Olympics dates back to the fateful Munich Games … [Read more...]

Report: Fox, Padres discussing 20-year TV deal

images

Fifteen years ago, Cox Communications — the largest cable TV provider in the San Diego market — got the novel idea to create a cable channel of its own that it would anchor with San Diego Padres baseball games. Channel 4 San Diego has been the local go-to outlet for Padres telecasts ever since, but that could be coming to an end. John Maffei in the North County Times reports the Padres are closing in on a deal with Fox that could double the rights fee now being paid by Channel 4. According to Maffei, a deal for 20 years that could net the Padres between $25 million-30 million a year could be announced soon. Channel 4 is paying the team $15 million this season. Maffei says creation of a Fox Sports San Diego network is being discussed, but industry sources say Padres games could be placed on FSN-Prime Ticket at least at the start of the contract. FSN-Prime Ticket broadcasts … [Read more...]
