‘Lin-sanity’s’ making the Knicks, NBA crazy good

jeremylin

With apologies to Tim Tebow, there has been no better sports story in recent months—maybe years—than the emergence of Jeremy Lin. The undrafted and twice-waived point guard's overnight transformation from bench warmer to folk hero has given a previously moribund New York Knicks franchise a transfusion of energy and excitement not even Spike Lee could have envisioned when injuries and lackluster play forced head coach Mike D'Antoni to put the Harvard grad into the starting lineup earlier this month. The phenomenon dubbed "Lin-sanity" has the Knicks realistically thinking about the playoffs while D'Antoni seemingly has secured a measure of job security that was unthinkable as recently as when the ball dropped in Times Square. The lack of a penetrating point guard who could both dish and swish like Steve Nash did for D'Antoni in Phoenix was the most noticeable flaw in the … [Read more...]

Another critical piece to righting Clipper ship

ioxjye9im9phdgfyfxvj1xb71

With their acquisition Wednesday of Chris Paul, the Los Angeles Clippers should be able to elbow their way into the NBA playoffs, a feat they've accomplished just once in the past 15 years. But in relinquishing Eric Gordon as part of a multiplayer trade with the New Orleans Hornets, they will have to wait at least another year to be considered a legitimate threat in the Western Conference. The Clippers' initial blueprint of bringing together the best point guard in the game with super soph Blake Griffin and a rising star in the slick-shooting Gordon would have transformed the franchise to heights not imaginable since it bolted blustery Buffalo for balmy San Diego in 1978. But because the NBA is bankrolling the Hornets franchise until a suitable buyer can be found, commissioner David Stern would have none of it. Instead of approving a deal that would have kept Gordon in L.A. and … [Read more...]

Flagrant foul on Stern for nixing Paul trade

1238049514

Just when there appeared to be labor peace in the NBA, David Stern and the boys decided to remind us who's really running the show by inexplicably killing a three-team trade that would have sent all-star guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers. The politics surrounding the league's vexing veto is stunning. On paper, the Lakers pulled off a masterful deal reminiscent of the ones that brought to L.A. the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1970s and more recently Pau Gasol, a key figure himself in Thursday's aborted transaction. As constructed, the trade would have sent Paul to the Lakers, with forwards Lamar Odom and Luis Scola, guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic, and a first-round draft choice going to the Hornets—the league-owned Hornets. Gasol was headed to Houston. Stern killed the deal, according to a spokesman, "for basketball reasons." Translation: At a time when the … [Read more...]

Summitt taking on toughest opponent yet

Pat-Summitt2

Courage is what enables people to persevere in the face of adversity. Pat Summitt defines courage. The legendary coach of the University of Tennessee's women's basketball team publicly disclosed she's been diagnosed with "mild" but distinct signs of “early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type,” which, as Sally Jenkins details in her poignant piece on Summitt in Tuesday's Washington Post, is an irreversible brain disease that destroys recall and cognitive abilities over time. An estimated 5 million Americans are afflicted. A coach of lesser stature—Summitt is the winningest ever, men's or women's; her teams have recorded 1,037 career victories against 196 losses; 18 Final Fours; and eight national championships—might have been asked to step down upon the revelation of her ailment. But Tennessee is standing by Summitt and for that they should be commended. It helps that … [Read more...]

NCAA probe brings dark cloud over Miami

Nevin Shapiro is a convicted cheat who took other people's money and used it to portray a lavish lifestyle unbefitting of his diminutive stature as a person (he's 5-feet-5) and human being. Along the way he apparently entranced a coterie of awestruck student-athletes whose school now stands on the precipice of being hit with some of the harshest sanctions an athletic program can endure. Shapiro, 42, is serving a 20-year prison sentence in New Jersey for running a $930 million Ponzi scheme. In an extensive interview with Yahoo! Sports, he claimed he gave money, gifts and other benefits including prostitutes, cars and yachting excursions to at least 72 University of Miami athletes from 2002 to 2010, including 12 current members (10 potential starters) of the football team. UM now finds itself squarely in the scope of the NCAA, which acknowledged it's been investigating the … [Read more...]

Revenue sharing thorny issue in NBA labor talks

Nba-logo-3.jpg

The NFL lockout enters its 106th day on Wednesday and a settlement still appears at least a couple of weeks away. While its owners and players continue to hammer out a deal, negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement in the NBA are about to move front and center and those could prove to be far more difficult. Before NBA owners can cut a deal with the players association — the current CBA expires Thursday — they must first get their own financial houses in order. The league has projected losses of about $300 million this season, and according to Michael Wilbon on ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption," 22 of the 30 franchises are claiming to be in the red. A reworking of how the teams share revenue seems inevitable, but a schism exists between owners and players on how each believes that should be accomplished, reports Associated Press basketball writer Brian Mahoney. The … [Read more...]

Knicks move on without their architect

Thursday's NBA Draft marked the end of the Donnie Walsh era in New York. Just two months after the Knicks returned to the playoffs for the first time in seven years, Walsh is preparing to exit the organization whose turnaround he orchestrated. He deserved better. It's unclear how much input the outgoing president of basketball operations had in the Knicks' draft-night activities that yielded Georgia Tech guard Iman Schumpert and Kentucky center Josh Harrellson, but Walsh's influence on the team's ressurection is undeniable. Called upon by ownership to fix the mess left behind by his predecessor Isiah Thomas, Walsh did exactly that by tidying up the books, importing two superstars and making pro basketball in New York relevant again. Walsh had a verbal agreement with team owner James Dolan to return as team president with full autonomy in basketball operations, the New York … [Read more...]

‘Vindication’ for Nowitzki, Mavs

nba_finals_logo-300x158

The dagger went into the Miami Heat with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter as Dirk Nowitzki, straining to shoot more than 30 percent from the field for the game, managed to elude Chris Bosh and nail a corner jumper to give the Dallas Mavericks a 10-point lead. "Great players are just like death and taxes," ESPN/ABC analyst Mark Johnson said of Nowitzki as Miami called timeout, desperately tryng to figure out how to stave off elimination. "Sooner or later they're gonna get you." These were Nowitzki's playoffs. They were Jason Kidd's and Jason Terry's, not LeBron James' or Dwyane Wade's or Chris Bosh's. After two previous tries, Kidd won his first title at the ripe old age of 38. Terry called the championship "vindication" for the Mavs. Careless turnovers and poor free-throw shooting sunk the Heat while second-half domination and stifling defense made world champions of the Mavs … [Read more...]

Mavs must close on road to take home gold

nba_finals_logo

They are one game away from the NBA championship and have been one of the best road teams in the playoffs. So, can the Dallas Mavericks go into South Florida and take one of two from the back-to-the-wall Miami Heat? Thursday's Game 5, won by the Mavericks 112-103, was a gutty performance by the Mavs, who made 56 percent of their field goals and 68 percent from the free-throw line en route to the victory that has them up 3-2 in the series. Each team had five players in double figures, but it was Dirk Nowitzki's 29 points, Jason Terry's 21 points and six key assists and Tyson Chandler's tireless work in the paint — backup Brendan Haywood was out with an injury and did not suit up — that carried Dallas to the win. Dallas coach Rick Carlisle's decision to install fireplug shooting guard J.J. Barea in the starting lineup put a spark into the Dallas lineup, and his 17 points and … [Read more...]

Warriors said engaged in ‘pretty hot’ Ellis trade talks

warriors_new_logo_1

It's starting to look like new Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson isn't going to have Monta Ellis in his backcourt. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com is reporting the Warriors are actively shopping the explosive shooting guard and could have a deal in place by this month's college draft. Talks, Berger writes, are considered "pretty hot." One deal, according to a Berger source, that has a "50-50" chance of getting done is an even-up swap with the Philadelphia 76ers for Andre Iguodala. Reasons given for an Ellis trade are the need for better defense and more height in the Golden State backcourt alongside budding superstar point guard Stephon Curry, and the $22 million Ellis is owed for the next two seasons. Berger mentions several other teams that could have pieces to part with for Ellis, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls — … [Read more...]
